A Day: Individuals of the Italian Renaissance

Hello everyone!  Yesterday we discussed the transformation from Medieval to Renaissance artwork.  We analyzed the influence of Ancient Greek and Roman styles of art, as well as the influence and patronage of the Catholic Church.  Furthermore, we analyzed the impact of new artistic styles, math, and science in creating a new form of art that was unique to the time period.  Lastly, we debated whether the Renaissance was a modernization movement that hurt the Catholic Church or whether the Catholic Church was able to sufficiently adapt to the times.

For homework, I provided each student with a specific individual from the Italian Renaissance.  The individuals that will be researched are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, Petrarch, Filippo Brunelleschi, Andrea Palladio, Sandro Botticelli, and Titian.  For the individual that you were assigned, you are to research on the Internet and provide answers to the following questions:
1.)  What was the general background of the individual (i.e., when/where did he live, what was his childhood like, why did he become an artist/architect/poet, etc.)?
2.)  What significant contributions did your individual make to the Italian Renaissance?
3.)  Why do we still study this individual?  Why is he still famous and known as a significant player within the Italian Renaissance?

I will check this homework and review during the beginning of next class.  Please also remember that you will have a quiz in the beginning of Tuesday's class (on our past two lessons).  Email me if you have any questions.  Have a great weekend!
