B Day: Jewish Ghettos

Hello everyone!  Today we discussed German expansion within the 1930s and how it affected Jewish people living within Nazi-occupied territories.  For homework, you are to read the article on the Jewish ghettos and answer the following questions:

1.)   In your opinion, what were the intentions of the Nazis in deporting Jewish people to ghettos and closing them in?
2.)  Why do you believe that the Germans wanted to establish ghettos near railway transports?
3.)  Why do you believe Germany did not establish ghettos within their own borders?
4.)  Why did the Germans establish a Jewish Council, or Judenrat, in each ghetto?  Why did the Germans themselves not govern the ghettos?
5.)  How might the establishment of a Judenrat have given Jewish people in the ghetto a false sense of security?
6.)  Identify some of the dilemmas that Jewish people faced on a daily basis in the ghettos.
7.)  Identify methods in which the Jewish people within the ghettos attempted to keep their sanity and dignity.

Please also remember that your test will be on Wednesday, May 8.  I will hand out study guides during next class.  Furthermore, my Periods 9-10 class will be required to submit their rough drafts for the research paper by midnight tonight.  Please remember that I will be unavailable to answer emails due to APA Idol.  If you have an issue submitting a paper, please email it to me by the required time.  Have a great day!
